With all due respect brother (I do not mean this contentiously), but… Do you truly think that this is a dealbreaker for being a Christian? That this is fundamentally incompatible with a Christian view of government (a la Rom. 13)? What do we say then about Joshua when he fought Sihon and Og? Or Samson with his lethal jawbone? Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m just not so sure that this is that simple.

Scott,
Thanks for stopping in.
This alone would not necessarily determine whether he is Christian or not. There are a number of things that point the other direction, though.
Yes, this is incompatible with a Christian view of government. There is a difference between punishment with the sword and cruel and unusual punishment. Torture is prolonged agony to the one being tortured. I don’t think Joshua’s conduct could be compared to water-boarding. Samson’s use of the ass’s jawbone doesn’t compare, either. Joshua and Samson are examples of those who were used of God to the benefit of His people in was. Their use of force was not cruel. There was no torture, but force that was necessary to quickly overcome the enemy. After the battle, they did not prolong the agonies of the defeated ones.
Thanks for stopping in.
